Zep Tepi: Stewart Swan
Presenting Zep Tepi, Stewart Swan’s second solo exhibition at RHODES. After Swan’s impressive debut Square Go (2024), this new solo exhibition draws inspiration from ancient Egyptian mythology, specifically the concept of 'the beginning’.
This idea, linked to the creation of the universe and the establishment of cosmic order serves as the foundation for this new series of original paintings, bringing the Egyptian gods to life in Swan’s unique, vibrant and expressive style.
In Zep Tepi, Swan reimagines these deities as performers in a play, each radiating a unique personality. His dynamic compositions and use of bold colours capture their essence through vivid gestures and lively body language. The interplay of colours is central to the atmosphere of each piece - cool blues evoke the calm of the Nile, while warm oranges and reds reflect the fiery heat of the desert.
Swan’s fascination with ancient artistic traditions shines through in this series. Inspired by the intricate carvings and symmetrical designs that adorn the entrances of Egyptian sacred sites, he incorporates these elements into his work to symbolise balance and harmony. This attention to detail connects his contemporary paintings to the timeless legacy of ancient artistry.
Continuing to develop his work from his phenomenal debut solo exhibition Square Go, Swan’s anamorphic characters still have their instantly recognisable style. Forms of man and beast become one emerging as surreal and darkly humorous portraits. Merging modern life with the mythical, Swan invites viewers into a world where gods and mortals coexist, and storytelling is woven through every brushstroke. Zep Tepi offers an exploration of creation, balance, and expression, bringing ancient themes into a fresh and contemporary light.
Zep Tepi will be on display at RHODES 9th January - 1st February 2025, with a Private View with the artist held on Thursday 16th January, 6-8pm.
