Spilman’s work balances spontaneity and intention, allowing colour, texture, and form to merge into a raw and expressive visual language.
Cat Spilman is a contemporary abstract artist, born in New York, whose work has been celebrated for its rich textures and dynamic brushstrokes. Traditionally known for her monochromatic, two-tone paintings using house paint - a medium familiar to her from her eight-year career as a Scenic Artist in film and television - Spilman’s work has shifted to a colourful focus in recent years.
Having exhibited at RHODES a total of eight times across her career, Spilman’s work has undergone a remarkable evolution whilst retaining an immediate focus on form and fluid movements. Her works feature large brushstrokes that connect and grow, flowing beyond the borders of the canvas. This is complemented by the oil pastel lines balancing the dark/light forms, and the lone dot, painted in the expanse of blank. The compositions create a meditative rhythm, indicative of the introspection Spilman often applies to her works as abstracted self-portraits.
Forming their own shapes, Spilman’s compositions explore complex and illusionary forms. The simplicity of her colour palette gives Spilman the space to bring her practice back to introspection, with a focus on the changes that have occurred, both personally and artistically, across the years. With her practice rooted in reflection, connection and spontaneity, Spilman’s work is inspired by the celebration of the small, intimate, and meaningful moments in day-to-day life.
Cat Spilman received her BFA with honours from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and worked in New York for several years before relocating to London, where she has since worked with RHODES closely. Since her first solo show in 2022, her popularity has surged, resulting in multiple sell-out exhibitions and four fully sold-out print editions. In 2025, Spilman was a Fall 2025 Hopper Prize finalist.
