Alongside our releases of Screenprints and Archival Pigment Prints, RHODES Editions has worked with six artists to create a range of new monotypes. These include works from artists returning to the medium, like Martha Zmpounou, Camilla Perkins, Morag Caister, Ludi Leiva, and Alexandria Couch, as well as from J. Carino, who has never worked with the monoprinting before.
J. Carino is known for his vibrant and joyful depictions of queer figures in nature. As a queer artist who has a deep connection to the natural world, Carino’s practice is about returning these bodies to natural landscapes, using vivid colours to express joy and belonging. His monotypes follow this theme, showing two figures exploring a forest made from vivid yellows, oranges, reds, and greens.
Martha Zmpounou is an artist who knows monoprinting well, having featured on the RHODES Editions Imprint Fair booth for two years running. Her works also explore themes of nature and relationships, but with a focus on how the spaces we experience life in hold onto the happy memories we make within them.
Camilla Perkins is well-known for her large-scale floral paintings, but the immediacy of monoprinting allows her to create works with similar bright colours and flowers, yet on a smaller, more delicate scale. Her series of monotypes is based on the same composition, but with Perkins working into each one slightly differently.
Morag Caister’s monotypes range from small, intimate portraits to larger ones, this year featuring more natural elements like leaves and branches crossing over her compositions. Caister’s monotypes really benefit from the hands-on nature of the medium, with her brushstroke texture really shining through.
Ludi Leiva utilises the softer side of monoprinting for her dreamlike, pastel scenes. Inspired by femininity and nature, her compositions often feature faces carefully hidden within sunsets, vines, and seascapes. Printing onto handmade Japanese paper, the result is delicate works that retain vibrancy.
Finally, Alexandria Couch will be showing three new monotypes, after the success of her RHODES Editions debut at Imprint Fair last year. Couch’s work is deeply personal, using monoprinting to layer vivid imagery in intense colour, often relating to her and her family's experiences as well as her general approach to the human experience.
RHODES Editions will be showing works by these artists and more at London Original Print Fair, Booth S13, Somerset House, 14 – 17 May. Get in touch with us to enquire about any of the artists mentioned, or how to get tickets to the fair.
