RHODES Editions is excited to announce the upcoming limited edition print from Riikka Sormunen, a Finnish artist known for her decorative and surreal works in oil.
Holiday marks the first-ever print release from Sormunen, who originally studied fashion design before moving towards illustration and finally oil painting. Sormunen’s oil paintings have been widely acclaimed throughout her career. She has received four art grants from the Finnish government and exhibited nationally and internationally, including at Richard Heller Gallery in Los Angeles and Ballon Rouge in Italy.
At 52.4 x 51.3 cm, Holiday makes a statement both in colour and size. The intensity and accuracy of the colours has been captured through Archival Pigment Printing, a method that utilises a wide range of inks to achieve the perfect shade. Sormunen's work is known for the contrast between joyful colours and sombre figures, so reaching this level of vibrance is essential to accurately translate her work from oil to print.
As well as the Archival Pigment Printing, Holiday has a layer of screen-printed varnish over the central figure. The gloss showcases the detail in the figure and the flowers, as well as the texture of the Somerset Velvet 330gsm Paper. The deckled edge of the work mirrors the contrast in the piece: the vibrant orange and the unsmiling woman, the hand-ripped edges and the shiny gloss.
