Project Room: First days: Kayoon Anderson
-
RHODES is pleased to present First Days, a new solo exhibition by Kayoon Anderson, opening January 2026.
This new body of work centres on domestic life and the arrival of a new baby, marking an intimate and reflective moment in the artist’s practice.
Originally from Seoul, now London based, Anderson studied architecture at the University of Cambridge before turning to painting. Her background in architecture continues to shape her work, particularly in her sensitive handling of space, structure and balance. After spending time in Siena studying medieval painting, she completed a diploma in portrait painting at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and an MA in Fine Art at City & Guilds of London. Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across the UK, Europe and the US.
In First Days, Anderson explores the quiet rhythms of early parenthood through imagined interiors and understated domestic scenes. Figures appear within these spaces but are not foregrounded; instead, they exist as part of the architecture itself, embedded within rooms shaped by routine, care and transition. The paintings reflect moments of stillness and adjustment, where identity subtly shifts alongside the evolving dynamics of home.
Drawing from photographs and memories spanning the UK, Europe and Korea, Anderson weaves together multiple times and places to create dream-like compositions. Familiar objects, patterns and colours recur, holding personal significance and echoing the layered nature of memory during this formative period. The works resist a fixed sense of time, mirroring the disorienting and tender early days of life with a newborn.
Influenced by European medieval painting and traditional Korean munbangdo still lives, Anderson employs playful multi-perspectives to construct quiet, contained spaces. First Days presents a series of paintings that are both deeply personal and universally resonant, offering a contemplative meditation on domestic life, care and becoming.
