  • RHODES is proud to present CTRL+Paint, a new solo exhibition by internationally acclaimed Spanish artist Lino Lago.

Continuing his exploration of the boundaries between classical art and contemporary image-making, Lago encourages viewers to consider how imagery is consumed today.

In CTRL+Paint, Lago deepens his signature dialogue with art history, meticulously rendered classical portraits are overlaid with sharp, digitally inspired gestures. These bold interruptions, often resembling brushstrokes made in image-editing software, slice across the canvas like coded commands. Suggestive of swipes, glitches or digital masks, these forms bring a 21st-century edge to traditionally composed images, blurring the line between the handmade and the virtual.

The addition of gold leaf introduces a new layer of complexity. Echoing the religious iconography of medieval painting while simultaneously evoking modern luxury and spectacle, gold in Lago’s hands is both sacred and subversive. It elevates and obscures, all while drawing attention to the act of painting itself.

Lago’s distinctive colour fields, bright, saturated, and purposefully graphic, stand in stark contrast to the refined, often demure figures they partially conceal. These intrusions feel at once aggressive and elegant, suggesting the contemporary viewer’s fractured relationship with visual culture. What does it mean to ‘view’ an artwork in the digital age?

With CTRL+Paint, Lago proposes a new way of seeing: one that embraces contradiction, honours tradition, and critiques our image-saturated world in equal measure. His work is a playful yet piercing commentary on how classical ideals survive, or are distorted, in a pixel-driven reality.

Lino Lago has exhibited widely across Europe and America. CTRL+Paint marks his third solo exhibition with RHODES and reaffirms his place as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary painting.

CTRL+Paint will be on display in RHODES Project Room 1st - 30th August 2025
