Painting becomes a site where memory, movement and place are held in tension, unfolding through gesture into shifting, intuitive structures.
Lily Ramírez is a painter whose work is rooted in the lived experience of the city, unfolding as a personal and spatial record of memory, movement, and place. Based in Los Angeles, she studied Painting at Otis College of Art and Design, developing an early and enduring commitment to the material language of paint.
Ramírez’s practice is driven by a sustained engagement with surface and gesture. Working predominantly in acrylic, she constructs her compositions through layered, repetitive marks that build into dense, textured fields. Lines accumulate and intersect, forming structures that suggest maps, pathways, and shifting urban grids. These works often read as abstracted cartographies, where fragments of landscape, architecture, and memory are compressed into fluid, evolving systems.
Colour is central to this process. Saturated hues are applied with immediacy, creating a sense of movement across the canvas while anchoring the composition. Rather than descriptive, colour operates as a spatial and emotional force, guiding the viewer through the work. Areas of intensity are offset by quieter passages, allowing the paintings to hold both energy and restraint within a single surface.
Her paintings are shaped by an interplay between observation and recollection. Drawing on personal histories and the rhythms of Los Angeles, Ramírez constructs images that sit between the internal and the external. These are not fixed representations of place, but shifting terrains where lived experience is translated into form. The result is a body of work that functions as an evolving archive, where gesture and material carry the weight of memory.
More recent works extend this approach into a more introspective register. Here, painting becomes a space for reflection, where emotion, language, and experience are held within the surface. Marks take on the quality of notation, and compositions unfold with a quieter intensity, maintaining a balance between immediacy and control.
Across her practice, Ramírez positions painting as both a physical and psychological terrain. Through gesture, colour, and accumulation, her works trace the intersections of memory and place, offering a sustained meditation on how environments are experienced, remembered, and reimagined.
