Cartoonish and tender at once, Sabo invents allure through distortion.
Kevin Sabo is an American artist, known for works that feature exaggerated, almost satirical figures in lurid pinks, greens, and blues. His practice utilises contrast between soft and sharp, short and tall, to explore gender dynamics through the depiction of drag queens and suited men.
His pieces not only explore the differences between them, but also work to give “femininity” the upper hand. Where his suited figures are seen urinating, or their anonymised bodies crammed into small spaces, the women in Sabo’s works dominate their worlds.
Sabo has previously credited drag queens and ”bimbos” in his life for forming the basis for these characters. They are depicted in hot pinks, with sharp stilettos and exciting outfits. When compared to the men, Sabo makes it clear who is in charge, turning his works into “a way of advocating for women and queer people.”
Kevin Sabo (b. 1994, United States) lives and works Richmond, VA. He has presented solo exhibitions internationally and has participated in numerous group presentations across the US and Europe. His works have been presented at prestigious art fairs, including NADA and Untitled Art, and in 2026 he is taking part in the PLOP Residency London. Head Over Heels at RHODES marks the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery.
