Head Over Heels, the new body of work from American artist Kevin Sabo, opened on April 10. To celebrate both the opening and the artist being in London for the PLOP Residency, we have invited Sabo to give an informal talk at the gallery on 15 April.
Sabo’s work explores the binaries of the world, creating elastic, hyperfeminine figures existing and contrasting the strict grey and sharp cityscapes they're depicted in. These women are inspired by the queer women and drag queens Sabo knows, as a gay man himself. This allows him to draw on femininity and include it in his art from a unique perspective.

The paintings in Head Over Heels are created from layers of acrylic paint, worked on with graphite to create texture and an edge. The graphite contrasts his relatively simple colour palettes, of creams, greys, and the occasional pop of pinks and oranges. By scratching over the acrylic with the sharp, dark graphite, Sabo gives his ladies an edge – from their defined breasts and bottoms to their sharp shading separating them from the flat, anonymous background.
Feel free to join us on April 15, 6PM, to listen to Sabo discuss the work further and answer some of your questions. Email us with any questions or to RSVP to the talk.
