RHODES Editions is delighted to introduce Shawn Huckins (b. 1984, USA), an artist recognised for his detailed technique and inventive composition. Working from his studio in New Hampshire, Huckins creates works that merge classical American landscapes with a contemporary twist. His recent series depicts expansive, light-filled vistas partially covered by precisely painted folds of fabric, such as satin, linen or velvet that sweep across the scene. These draped elements serve as compositional interruptions between the viewer and the outside, appearing unexpectedly to disrupt the scene.

In these works, Huckins shows the same attention to detail seen in 18th- and 19th-century portraiture, now used for his drapery. Each composition begins with a traditional view – trees, mountains, open skies – then introduces a curtain falling across the image. The effect is felt both in experience and analysis: the curtain, by its nature, frames the scene and focuses the eye on the landscape. However, it also introduces questions of what does and does not belong in nature, and how our views can be controlled. Huckins has often used meticulously painted fabric to obscure and guide the viewer’s experience of his work, exploring the idea of what is and isn’t seen, and the artist’s ability to shape this.
Huckins studied Studio Art at Keene State College and at the University of Wollongong, Australia. His work has been exhibited widely across the United States, including at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Tucson Museum of Art, and he was recently named the 2025 Interventions artist at Cheekwood Estate & Gardens. His paintings are held in both public and private collections internationally.
