Gavin Lynch, b. 1978, is a Canadian artist whose works demonstrate his passion for nature. During his studies of art history he spent a lot of time hiking, and the two experiences merged to create his current artistic practice. Lynch has exhibited across the world, as well as having works in the collections of several major Canadian companies, and being the recipient of multiple artwork awards and grants.

Lynch’s works begin with a digital collage, and this sets the basis for his composition, themes, and forms for what he will build on. The collage is based on images from his own travels, as well as archival photographs, stock pictures, and more. Images are often from the countryside he lives in, as he exists within the landscapes he captures in his art. While these collages create a useful blueprint, they also allow the work to be created in multiple formats, and for different versions of it to exist at the end. Similarly to how nature will never truly be replicated in an image, his works live a dual existence in both the digital and analogue world.

While Lynch's landscapes often have their basis in nature personal to him, his artistic techniques allow the viewer to place it in their own experiences. His blurred and pixelated compositions, therefore, have two roles: referencing the border between nature and technology, while anonymising the landscapes so everyone can relate to them. This tension between expanses of fluidity and the sharp, angular forms creates an added depth to the nature he depicts.

Gavin Lynch's Print Image

Lynch tends to stick to a traditional colour palette in his rendering of the landscape. Therefore, it is essential to his practice that he incorporates multiple styles when combining the natural features in his works. His trees and ferns may be reminiscent of 1990s video game graphics, but the blue skies are filled with naturalist clouds, and his waterfalls seem to glow as they tumble down undefined rocky outcrops. A variation of greens, browns, and other earthy tones create a sense of a vast array of nature in the semi-abstracted worlds Lynch creates.
