Print Release with Jihye Park

RHODES Editions' newest print marks the debut print edition for the South Korean artist

RHODES Editions presents Bonsai Collection, a new print release created in collaboration with South Korean artist Jihye Park. For the first time Park is bringing her dreamlike landscapes to print with this giclée edition.

The edition is printed on Somerset Radiant White Velvet 330gsm and finished with a hand-torn deckled edge. While giclée is a new format for Park, it preserves her strong lines and deep colour, offering a new way to experience her work - and at a more accessible price point.

Bonsai Collection depicts a fantasy realm where magic meets the real world, creating a portal to escape everyday life. The wooden shelves in the foreground hold a set of detailed bonsai trees that fade into the rocky landscape behind them. The scene blurs the boundary between interior and exterior, structure and nature, reality and fantasy.

We asked Jihye some questions in order to further understand her influences and artistic process.

Where are your landscapes inspired by?

My landscapes are deeply connected to where I live. If you look at my earlier work, you can often tell where I was at the time — the surroundings leave a mark on each piece.

What is your connection to nature?

In medieval Rome, as cities grew denser, there was no longer space for gardens within homes. So people began painting garden frescoes inside, as a way of holding on to nature. That longing hasn’t changed. For me, nature is a place of retreat — somewhere I always want to stay.

What inspires your colour palette?
Many plants are green, but each one is a different shade. Every time I paint, I think about those subtle differences.

What sources inspire your creations — for example, music or literature?
When I’m preparing for a new work, I like to read short stories, essays, or poetry, anything that sparks my imagination. But what inspires me most is walking. I often visit villages where the natural surroundings are especially beautiful. Nature gives me something new every time.

How has living in Germany affected your artistic practice?
Living in Germany, and in other unfamiliar places, brings new stimuli. The plants I pass on my daily walks appear different each time, depending on the weather or my mood. That constant change feeds my creativity.
