‘Bond Girl’ encapsulates Spilman’s artistic technique, both in form and medium. As seen in her previous two prints, this newest release features Spilman’s use of abstraction to explore the energy in composition and shapes. The thick lines across the print mimic those of a large brush, while the mahogany-red dot offsets the hot pink surrounding it. Through the balancing of colour, shape, and movement, Spilman’s ‘Bond Girl’ creates a playground of artistic techniques.
This edition is Spilman’s first print in colour, with the base created from a five-colour screenprint. The multiple layers were essential for the depth of colour in the focal brushstrokes. To embellish the print, lines are hand-drawn in crayon above the ink, creating further playfulness and ensuring each work in this edition is unique. The paper the edition is printed on has hand-torn edges, highlighting the faux-border created with the pink background and the crayon outline.
It was important to both the artist and RHODES Editions that the crayon lines would be done by hand in contrast to the main body of the work. This creates depth in the piece, as the visible texture of the crayon counters the straight edges created by the screenprint. The artist herself spent a day hand-finishing each print in the K2 Print Studio, as well as signing and numbering the works in pencil.
Cat Spilman has previously released two prints with RHODES Editions, ‘Good Things Coming’ (2023) and ‘White Rabbit’ (2022). Unsurprisingly, considering her popularity, both of these editions sold out.
