Raffael Bader, a visual artist based in Leipzig, is known for his abstracted landscapes that reflect tensions in the world. His paintings capture the essence of nature – not just how it looks, but how it feels as he experiences it. Although Bader grew up in southern Germany, he spent some time in the north before ultimately settling in the east. His relocations, including extended time abroad, have significantly impacted his approach towards landscapes. From these varied experiences, Bader explores landscapes as world’s full of contrasts, with these very tensions keeping everything in balance.
Bader’s approach to art is flexible and open, celebrating imperfections as a source of creativity. Perfection, Bader believes, can limit artistic potential. Instead, he lets the process guide him, focusing on elements such as colours, shapes, and lines found in nature. His works often start as simple sketches or "notes" that evolve into fully formed pieces as the painting develops its own character. This made the transition from mixed media originals to woodblock prints smooth, as the medium still allows him to merge smaller forms into larger, abstract landscapes.
While this is our first print collaboration with Bader, he currently has two original works showing in the RHODES group landscape exhibition ‘Uplands’. Bader began exhibiting internationally in 2020, and has now participated in over 20 group shows and five solo exhibitions, including at Galerie Potemka and Rocket Science. He has also been recognised for his work several times, having been awarded the Denkzeit grant in 2020, and a work scholarship from Stiftung Kunstfonds Bonn in 2021.
