Nick Smith's pixelated collages, renowned for their fusion of pop culture and fine art, will take centre stage at this special event. The artwork intricately captures the essence of colour and language, inviting viewers to explore the intersection between visual imagery and textual narratives.

In a recent interview, Smith shared insights into his creative process and inspirations. Drawing from pop culture, art history, and iconic branding, his pixel art transcends traditional boundaries, evoking a sense of nostalgia and curiosity among viewers. "I create pixelated collages that capture the essence of colour and words," Smith explains. "Up close, my work is abstract in nature, yet from a distance, it transforms into a distinct, coherent image."

Smith's journey into pixel art began as a playful pastime, arranging colour swatches into patterns and rudimentary images. "Before diving into the art world, my background was in design, where colour swatches were a staple for referencing hues," he recalls. "My aim is to maintain a lively interaction with the audience, merging fine art with elements of popular culture."

'ART' by Nick Smith.

From his initial creations to his recent collaborations, Smith's art has evolved, reflecting his deepening exploration of themes and concepts. "My early work was trying to recreate modern masters, but I quickly moved on to researching more heavily in specific themes," he shares. "Now I juggle subject matter, religion and mass consumerism, turn of the century painters, and authors."

Smith's process for creating his pixelated collages is meticulous and multifaceted. It begins with selecting a theme or idea that sparks his curiosity, often driven by nostalgia, passion, or curiosity. He then collates images related to the theme, conducting thorough research, and even visiting museums in person for inspiration. Once the images are digitized, Smith adds original text or passages from various sources, from historical texts to biography quotes, creating another dimension to the works and playing with how these texts affect how viewers interpret the images. The completed works are printed onto adhesive paper and meticulously collaged onto paper or board.
