RHODES Editions at Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair

RHODES Editions will be showcasing at the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair (WCPF) 26th -29th October 2023.

Woolwich Works, 11 No 1 St, Royal Arsenal, London SE18 6HD

We are thrilled to announce that RHODES Editions will be involved in this curated exhibition of contemporary print work,  which offers a platform to both emerging creatives and internationally prominent printmakers.

Since 2016, Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair has been the leading voice in the UK for contemporary print. The fair continuously pushes the possibilities and developments in print technology, regenerating traditional practice and fostering artist’s passion for print. WCPF hold a significant interest in education, and have made it their mission to educate collectors and novices about printmaking processes and techniques, as well as giving emerging artists a platform to showcase their work. With over 1000 original artworks, there will be a range of styles and techniques to take in and to add to your personal body of works – it is also the perfect place to begin a collection!

RHODES is delighted to be representing Nick Smith, Lino Lago, Steven Ormandy, Eliza Hopewell, Jan Kalab, Cat Spilman, Ces McCully, Cathy Tabbakh, Hayden Kays, and Eddie Jones at the upcoming fair.

Nick Smith’s print work involves curating colour swatches and written labels into handmade collages, each with their own distinct name. This unique style of combining image and word allows a narrative reading of his works, which in turn explore motifs from art history, popular culture and body representation. These large-scale prints will be available to purchase at WCPF.

Lino Lago continues to push boundaries of traditional art forms with his Birth of Venus print. Translating his large-scale abstract portrait paintings into digitally created prints, Lago incorporates the old and new with disruptions of vivid colour in conventional paintings. This fragmentation unites the division between contemporary and classical art - a skill that is shown in his ‘Lustre’ collection, currently exhibiting in our main room at RHODES gallery. CRASH (Venus) is a gicleé print: a fine art print created by a specialized high resolution inkjet printer. Each print is stamped and signed by Lago.

Steven Ormandy’s paintings have also been transferred into print form for the upcoming fair. His instantly recognisable style combines geometric and lyrical forms. The natural world is ever present in the body of his works through organic shapes and fluid movement, yet the colour palette contrasts against the idea of a ‘natural’ scene. Harbour is a screen print created by layers of paint, pressed in a stencil through a mesh material onto paper. Each layer requires its own stencil to form the final image.

We are proud to have Eliza Hopewell’s work represented by us for the first time at Woolwich Fair. Hopewell has previously exhibited in Berlin, Brescia, Tuscany, and at many other locations. Her artistic career began by painting on plates and has since then expanded into exploring the duality between function and art, murals, fashion, and printmaking. Hopewell strongly believes that art should be able to be experienced by anyone, to be lived around and interacted with - which makes her prints the perfect piece to hang in a home. Etchings, such as September Wind, requires a process of drawing a design onto a copper plate and submerging this into an acid bath, before she can use it to transfer her image onto paper.

Jan Kalab is a Czech visual artist that practices with vibrantly coloured, abstract designs in organic shapes. His work includes paintings, sculptures, NFTs, installations, street murals, and graffiti. The contrast between free-flowing graffiti artwork and controlled geometric forms shows how Kalab combines styles into interdisciplinary pieces. Jan Kalab has produced murals in Paris, Prague, London, and other cities as well as his work on canvas and print. Glow Explosion 423 is a gicleé print (high resolution ink jet printer generated print) that will be available at the RHODES stall at WCPF 2023.

Cat Spilman is a contemporary abstract artist; she produces raw and intimate pieces to address themes of separation, belonging, modern feminism, and motherhood. Spilman’s works are designed to elicit a physical reaction - each piece is emotive, with a limited monochrome colour palette leaves room for the viewer to connect with her and her artwork. Originally trained in film making, Spilman has since moved to focus on her art practise full time. Good Things Coming is a lithograph print that has been created by drawing a design with oil-based crayon or ink onto a flat stone (or metal plate) and affixed with chemicals. The plate can then be used to hold ink and transfer the image onto paper to produce a finished artwork.

Ces McCully is an Australian artist, known best for her contemporary works that are largely text based. Her bold and colourful lettering expresses confessions and secret thoughts about the world around her. Simple forms in soothing tones allows for a harmonious relationship between the beautiful visual aspect of the letters versus what the words actually say to us - as the sometimes striking nature of the text is cooled by the design. I Thought That I Hid My Weirdness Well was made by combining 14 different colour stencils to screen-print this design onto paper.

Cathy Tabbakh is a contemporary fine art painter; her work focuses mainly on botanicals and natural forms. Many of her pieces have a restricted colour palette, conveying a specific mood. Bold and bright imagery combines imaginary forms with the existing interiors of the still life, captured in her home. Frozen in time, these pots, vases, and plants pushes us to find inspiration in the everyday objects around us. Tabbakh’s Don’t Envy Green gicleé print will be available at the WCPF 2023.

Hayden Kays is a British artist, and is widely considered to be a part of the new generation of rising pop artists. Exhibiting in Amsterdam, Paris, Hong Kong and others locations, Kay’s sharp witticisms and electric imagery becomes increasingly more relevant - he comments on contemporary society, politics and culture at large in his works. Beyond The Rave is a linocut print created by cutting a drawing into a material in relief. The uncut layers left behind is the design that will be inked onto paper to print the final artwork.

Edward (Eddie) Jones draws inspiration from mountainous regions and barren uplands for his drawings, paintings, analogue photography, and prints. His finished works play with a sense of space, place, and time. In layering tonally similar colours, he achieves areas of darkness that produce an ambiguous sense of light. Jones uses an etching viscosity method to print his Ogwen Seeing Stones series. This print method allows Jones to outline his landscapes clearly and incorporate his mark making with a combination of relief and intaglio print modes. This produces multiple colours in mixed inks (viscosity) and achieves the blurring of time that we see in Ogwen Seeing Stones.
