RHODES is excited to announce an upcoming exhibition of an abstraction artist Stephen Ormandy, that will take place from the 6th of July 2023 - his return to the gallery after his fantastic 2020 solo show 'Intransitive'.
Ormandy is an Australian artist, whose paintings combine geometric and lyrical forms. His graphic planes of colour primarily operate as purely abstract schemas while occasionally bordering on recognisable iconography and figuration.
Due to his recognisably bold and experimental colour combinations, and the prominent use of line, shape and form, Ormandy has secured a spot among the most influential contemporary Australian abstractionists. His body of work encopasses oil painting, sculpture, textile and jewerly, created solo or in collaboration with Dinosaur Design, a design studio Stephen has established in the final year of study, and is held in public collections across Australia including Artbank, The Sir William Dobell Art Foundation, The Powerhouse Museum, The National Gallery of Victoria and The Art Gallery of Western Australia. He has also been featured in the recently published book by Thames&Hudson Australian Abstract.

Learn more about Stephen Ormandy
Drawing inspiration primarily from nature and the world that surrounds him, Ormandy incorporates a strong design aesthetic. His artistic process revolves around creating photographic collages by cutting shapes from the coloured paper and playfully arranging them to find harmonies in tone, colour and form. Similarly, his sculpture work is inspired by the same concept, presenting the viewer with essentially 3D collages formed from the ‘alphabet of shapes’. As the artists explains:
"My work is born of the subconscious mind. I’m looking for vibration and rhythm, the play of line creating positive and negative space, searching for tonal balance through contrast or harmony, while developing chroma relationships that hug or repel".

In his new series created in collaboration with RHODES, My Algorithm Loves Me, Ormandy continues his unique and playful exploration of colour and form, encouraging the viewer to partake in a visual discourse in-between the mediums, engaging with artworks on a sensory level.
In addition, RHODES Editions will be releasing the print to coincide with the upcoming show.
