Jess Cochrane 'Of Citrus and Status' - New Collection

Introducing a new series of original artworks by Jess Cochrane
We're delighted to introduce a new series of original works by Jess Cochrane. These new works remain true to Cochrane's familiar medium of mixing photography and painting and follow her continued explorations of art historical themes blended with contemporary culture.

With these new pieces Cochrane has remixed her work and presents 'woven' artworks for the first time. The new pieces further push the hybrid nature of Cochrane's work into the realm of fabric, possessing an almost tapestry-like quality.

Here we see Cochrane using the symbolism to make comparisons with contemporary status symbols; idealised beauty, immediacy and access. The series discusses validation and our desperation for perfection within the impossibly fast pace of the modern age.

WITH OR WITHOUT PULP

Signed, Verso
84 x 59 cm (33 1/8 x 23 1/4 in)

A woman is seen cradling a pile of oranges, some of which are starting to rot, and wrestling with a large plastic carton of orange juice. In the 16th Century oranges have been pictured as a status symbol to the wealthy, signifying exotic travel and trade.

Playing with collage and woven paper, Cochrane is pushing the boundaries of her own practice. Her painterly gestures slowly twist and warp the image lying underneath, getting more and more abstracted as the images are cut, contorted and woven into one another. The inevitable spiral of anxiety around self-image and social media.

I WANT IT ALL

84 x 59 cm (33 1/8 x 23 1/4 in)

Cochrane’s work continues to question the relationship between society, consumerism and pop culture. Her focus is on feminine beauty, illustrated through the application of paint over photographic images, in this case further manipulating the imagery through intricate folds.

Cochrane reflects upon insecurity and perfectionism in the modern age. Connecting the history of art, design and advertising, this new series of works play on the idea of pop culture and its roots that are planted in both displaying and disguising parts of ourselves.
