Undercurrents: Koshiro Akiyama
-
RHODES is delighted to present Undercurrents, the new solo exhibition by Japanese artist Koshiro Akiyama.
In Undercurrents, Akiyama unveils a new series of paintings that dwell in the space between dream and drift, where water becomes the medium of memory and sensation. Layers of transparent pigment, ink, and wash fold over one another to evoke suspended moments, peering through rippling surfaces into worlds beneath.
In many of these canvases, figures float half submerged, their outlines softened by water’s distortion. These anonymous figures add a narrative to these works. It is unclear who these figures are, or where they are going. They’re suspended with us in this dreamlike world, adrift in the washes of Akiyama’s mark making.
Akiyama’s process feels meditative. Each brushstroke navigates tension between control and surrender. The inks and paints bleed into one another, encouraged but ultimately allowed to flow their own way. This lack of control creates works which feel alive, moving and bleeding into one another without interruption.
Undercurrents invites viewers to immerse themselves in the subtle rhythms of Akiyama’s world. It is a space to reflect, to notice the quiet movements beneath the surface, and to consider the emotions and memories that drift just out of reach.
Undercurrents will be on display at RHODES 30th October - 22nd November 2025, with a Private View held on Thursday 6th November, 6-8pm.
