RHODES is delighted to present Public House, a solo exhibition by Irish artist Peter Doyle, opening Thursday 5 June 2025 in the RHODES Project Room.
This new series of original paintings delve into the cultural and philosophical significance of Irish and British pubs, reimagining them as a vital space for public life and social imagination.
Doyle, a self-taught artist now based in Brighton, is known for his expressive acrylic paintings that blend everyday observation with dreamlike distortion. His work is characterised by a "naïve bravery" and primarily employs acrylic on canvas, enriched with motifs of everyday life. Doyle’s compositions often feature solitary figures in familiar yet otherworldly environments. In Public House, Doyle turns his focus to the pub as a site of communal convergence and cultural memory. Drawing inspiration from the historical role of pubs in shaping public discourse and social interaction, the exhibition explores how these spaces function as "third places", environments that foster community outside of home and work. This concept aligns with sociological theories on the importance of informal public gathering spaces in the development of civil society. The exhibition features a series of new paintings that capture the atmosphere and social dynamics of pub life. Doyle's work invites viewers to consider the pub not merely as a place of leisure but as a crucible for public engagement and cultural expression. His depictions of pub interiors and patrons are instilled with a sense of intimacy and immediacy, reflecting his background in graffiti and his instinctual approach to mark-making.Public House offers a timely reflection on the evolving role of public spaces in contemporary society. As urban landscapes and social habits continue to change, Doyle's work prompts a re-evaluation of the pub's place in our collective consciousness.Public House will be on display in RHODES Project Room 6th - 28th June 2025, with a Private View with the artist held on Thursday 5th June, 6-8pm. -
