  • RHODES is pleased to present Passing Through, a UK debut solo exhibition by Canadian artist Gavin Lynch, opening Thursday 5th June. Inspired by a two-week road trip to the Isle of Skye, the exhibition features a new body of paintings that reflect on landscape, movement, and perception.

Lynch, who lives and works in Quebec, is celebrated for his innovative approach to contemporary landscape painting. Renowned for his depictions of the Canadian wilderness, Lynch has challenged himself with this new body of work, extending his practice into the Scottish landscape. Drawing from a wide range of references, from landscape painting traditions to digital imaging and collage, Lynch constructs complex, multi-layered works that blend the organic and the artificial. His process begins with photographic material or hand-drawn sketches, which are then digitally manipulated before being translated into richly textured paintings on canvas. The result is a unique visual language that fuses geometric structure with gestural mark-making, natural motifs with abstract fields of colour.

In Passing Through, Lynch continues this signature interplay, using the road trip format as a conceptual framework. These paintings are not fixed views, but glimpses, transient and flickering, assembled from memories, maps, and motion. There is a tension between clarity and distortion, surface and depth, that echoes the impermanence of travel and the layered experience of place.

Rather than aiming for realism, Lynch invites the viewer into a reconstructed landscape that feels both immediate and elusive. His use of vivid colour, flattened perspective, and fragmented form evokes the disjointed rhythm of the journey itself, the sudden shift in weather, the blur of trees through a window, the stillness at the summit of a climb.

Passing Through is a meditation on how we see and remember the land around us. It affirms Lynch’s place as a leading voice in contemporary landscape painting, where tradition, technology, and lived experience intersect.

Lynch has exhibited widely across Canada, including Musee des Beaux Artes in Montreal and solo presentations in Toronto, Vancouver and Edmonton. Lynch has also exhibited in Sydney, Australia. Passing Through marks Lynch's first solo exhibition in the UK. His work is held in prominent public and corporate collections such as the Royal Bank of Canada, the City of Ottawa, Simon Fraser University, and Air Canada.

Passing Through will be on display at RHODES 6th - 28th June 2025, with a Private View with the artist held on Thursday 5th June, 6-8pm.

    Biography

Gavin Lynch reimagines landscape painting through a unique and innovative style that combines elements of collage and digital manipulation. His approach challenges traditional notions of landscape by creating visually rich and textured canvases that invite viewers to explore complex interactions between nature and the human experience.

Lynch’s work is characterised by a digitally informed, layered technique that incorporates opposing visual and textural qualities. This collage-like method allows him to juxtapose different elements, resulting in compositions that balance structure and spontaneity. By employing a diverse range of materials and techniques, he crafts landscapes that are both familiar and abstract, engaging the viewer’s senses in unexpected ways.
