Project Room: Reverie: Martha Zmpounou
-
RHODES is delighted to present Reverie, a deeply personal solo exhibition by Greek-born, London-based artist Martha Zmpounou.
Known for her evocative figurative paintings, Zmpounou’s latest series in watercolour on paper offers an intimate exploration of the bonds that shape us—between family, lovers, and friends—revealing the fragile beauty of human connection.
Drawing from personal archives, art history, and found imagery, Zmpounou delicately layers pigment and meaning, crafting dreamlike compositions where the lines between reality, memory, and imagination blur. Her work reflects on the delicate balance between the ideal and the imperfect, capturing the emotions, tensions, and quiet moments that define our relationships.
The exhibition title, Reverie, speaks to the dreamlike quality of Zmpounou’s work, where figures and moments appear suspended in time. Through soft washes of colour and fluid brushwork, she brings to life the moments that linger—fragments of conversations, stolen glances, and the echoes of relationships past and present. Her figures, often appearing fragmented or in transition, mirror the fleeting, ever-changing nature of human connection.
Influenced by artists such as Lucian Freud, David Hockney, and Marlene Dumas, as well as the cinematic storytelling of David Lynch, Zmpounou’s paintings blend abstraction and realism, capturing both the tenderness and complexity of human bonds.
Reverie will be on display at in our Project Room 7th - 29th March 2025, with a drinks reception held on Thursday 6th March, 6-8pm. -
