Project Room: Where There Is No Sun: Joy Yumasangie
RHODES is pleased to present Where There Is No Sun, a powerful new exhibition by London-based artist Joy Yamusangie. The exhibition invites viewers into a world of superstition, hope, and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
Set in a fictional town where the sun never rises, Yamusangie’s striking series of paintings on canvas feature deep blacks and reds, capturing intimate moments of people alone at night. In this world, the figures continue their struggle, gambling with life and holding onto fragile hope, despite the overwhelming sense of darkness around them.
Where There Is No Sun explores the delicate balance between bad luck and unyielding faith, offering a visual meditation on the power of belief when everything else seems uncertain. Themes of chance happenings, gambling, lotteries, and the notion of being “down and out” are central to this series of paintings, inviting reflection on the tenacity of hope in challenging circumstances.
Joy Yamusangie’s art navigates the boundaries between dream and reality, creating fictional worlds that are deeply rooted in personal experience. Through a range of media, including drawing, painting, film, and collaging, Yamusangie explores themes of trans masculinity, intimacy, and Blackness. This exhibition builds on the artist’s previous works, including a Tate-commissioned public art installation (2018), a solo show at Tiwani Contemporary (2023), and a selection for the Royal Academy Summer Show (2021).
Where There Is No Sun promises to be a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant exhibition for all who have ever believed in something, even when the odds are stacked against them.
Where There Is No Sun will be on display at in our Project Room 7th February - 1st March 2025, with a drinks reception held on Thursday 6th February, 6-8pm.
