Couch is known for her vividly coloured artworks that explore the human experience through a combination of different methods and media.
Alexandria Couch is a visual artist whose work explores the intersection between dissociative dreamscapes and an expansive personal archive both historic and mythical. Textiles, recycled materials, text, paint and furniture are used to hold, mend, disrupt and document a vast interior world in which contractions are inevitable. Using shapeshifting as a mode of operation, Couch interrogates the space between the dimensions of her reality and indeterminate universes.
The mixture of mediums, including monoprinting, embroidery, drawing, and painting, creates an almost unfinished style. This undefined aspect is intentional – it allows the piece to continue to be made, its unfinished nature mirrors the shapeshifting that people undergo in changing environments.
Couch received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking and Painting from the University of Akron’s Myers School of Art in 2020, and later completed her Master of Fine Arts in the same disciplines at the Yale School of Art in 2023. She has exhibited in a number of prominent shows, including the FRONT 2022 Triennial for Contemporary Art. Couch was also honored with the Rising Star Award from Old Trail School, which recognizes alumni under 30 who have demonstrated exceptional professional achievement and community leadership.
