Martha Zmpounou is a London based figurative artist exploring themes of reverie, love, loss and memory.
Martha Zmpounou is a Greek visual artist known for her exploration of the human figure as a space for expression and transformation. Raised near the sea in Greece, Zmpounou was drawn to art from a young age, spending her childhood painting and drawing. Her journey as an artist solidified during her studies at fine art school, where she began to view herself as a lifelong practitioner of her craft.
Zmpounou’s work delves into the complexities of the human body, portraying it as a fragmented, multifaceted entity that evolves through layering. She is particularly interested in the interplay between abstraction and representation, often working at the periphery of the figurative. Her mixed-media approach blends diverse techniques, resulting in pieces that capture the fluid nature of identity and the fragmented self.
Her influences range from renowned painters like Lucian Freud, David Hockney, and Marlene Dumas, to unexpected figures like filmmaker David Lynch, whose narrative quality and atmosphere resonate deeply with her work. Zmpounou's art seeks to balance seduction and repulsion, often invoking a sense of incomplete or cryptic forms. She embraces chance and surprise in her creative process, allowing accidents to inform her work and create unexpected outcomes.
Having relocated to London in 2009, Zmpounou has pushed her creative boundaries, often experimenting with new themes and media. After years of working on paper, she is now returning to canvas, exploring narrative environments shaped by the human body.
