While Ruban strives to understand the universal, her work is heavily guided by her unique experiences as a woman
Diana Ruban (b. 1999) is a Ukrainian artist whose works explore the human experience, and how this is both shaped by an individual's age, gender, race, etc., but also the universal moments we all share.
She began painting at 16 and is entirely self-taught, allowing her work to be truly shaped by her own feelings and ideas about how art should be.
While Ruban strives to understand the universal, her work is also heavily guided by her own experience as a woman. This manifests in the blue female figures that often feature in her art, representing the strength of women and also their resilience through adversity. They appear strong and limitless in interesting landscapes, and are often with each other, rather than alone.
Folk also has an impact on her work, seen through the motif of the blackbird that often accompanies these women. Blackbirds often represent transformation and spirituality, as though Ruban is identifying both with her figures and with the flying birds.
Sculpture has also featured in her artistic practice, often in mixed media form involving clay and soil, painted on top with acrylics. These sculptures feature similar figures and objects as her paintings, some painted, some left plain.
Ruban's work has been exhibited across the globe, including Turkey, the UK, Switzerland, and America, as well as featuring in Harper's Bazaar Magazine.
