Capturing images of moorland and moutainous regions, Eddie Jones removes a sense of time and place to submerge us into his tonally layered drawings, paintings and print work.
Eddie Jones is a contemporary artist from the Northwest of England that has recently graduated from the City and Guilds of London Art School. In Jones’ work, there is a key focus on mountainous regions and landscapes as he transcribes the images that he captures through photography into drawings, paintings, and prints.
Using an analogue camera, Jones immerses himself in wildlife whilst on his expeditions to Snowdonia and during his explorations of other terrains. From these images, he captures the rural areas of moorland and uninhabited regions which he later interprets into other art forms.
His finished works play with a sense of space, place, and time as he layers tonally similar colours to achieve areas of darkness which produces an ambiguous sense of light. These introspective, quiet, and foreboding images contrast to the energising and cultural character of London – where Jones now lives and works since completing his studies. These disparities between the bustling city and desolate wildernesses provides a space of escapism for Jones, a tribute to his youth spent in the Northwest of England.
Inspired by artists such as the Group of Seven, we can see similarities between these works as they both inhabit themes of nature as a spiritual force rather than the romanticisation of landscape artworks that we more commonly see. This is to purely amplify mood and emotive response - a focus that is important to the formal decision making that takes place in Jones’ studio. The spiritual attraction that Jones experiences in relationship to the barren uplands and natural spaces results in the tonally layered outcomes of his works. This inability of the viewer to situate themselves in a specific time or space in the work, fully submerges them into his environmental scenes, causing them to feel a sense of unease and fantasy.
Previously, Eddie Jones has won various art prizes such as the Worshipful Company of Painter - Stainers’ Fine Art Scholarship 2021 – 2023, New Blood Emerging Art Prize 2023, Freelands Painting Prize 2023 and he has been shortlisted for the Gilchrist Fisher Award for 2024. Jones also has an upcoming residency with Frenkiel & Ponti Fondazione.
