Kim uses her distinctive style to create a visual metaphor of both external and internal relationships
Yool Kim is a contemporary Korean artist, based in Seoul. In her mixed-media artworks, she navigates and explores the ideas of identity and subconsciousness.
Her practice has developed over time, currently involving the exploration of human connecion, both with others and within ourselves. Often the motif of a swan is used, mingling with her human figures and, in some works, merging with them. Kim uses her distinctive style, creating humans and animals out of smaller, interlocking faces, to create a visual metaphor of our relationships with others and how they shape ourselves.
Kim's artistic process is very complex, developed by her time studying colout at university. She starts with a one-colour base - often red, purple, blue, or green - and works over this in a rainbow palette. The result is works containing complex layers of colours and paint, often featuring 3-dimensional details around eyes and other key aspects of her compositions.
Yool Kim was born in 1982 and graduated from Hongik University Graduate School of Industry in 2015 with a degree in Colour Studies. She has since featured in group and solo exhibitions, and had works in the RHODES booth at UNTITLED Art Fair.
