Grace Tobin explores the interdependence between human life and environment, abstracting forms to then reconstruct and challenge our sense of perspective.
Grace Tobin is a contemporary American painter, who has spent the last few years working in London. Through her works, Tobin investigates our relationships to the environments we inhabit and the way these connections impact our sense of self. Her practice circles the idea of space, documenting the physical and emotional impact it has on forming our identity.
The artist is interested in the semiotic value we place on our surroundings. She re-imagines how our space mirrors the psychological and physiological connections we create in our world.
Through her dream-like state of the work pared with graphic stylisation and repetitive patterns, Tobin questions the ways in which our environments display an inner narrative. This style and approach mirror the themes of imperfection and repetition in our lives and routines. She is particularly interested in how physical objects can build and hold emotional value over time to embody memories and a sense of self. What and how these objects and spaces are composed can tell us much about a personal state of being.
Along with her study of environments as made up of objects in the domestic setting, Tobin also considers how this embodiment of the psychological and physiological connections we create in our world can be expressed through abstracted figural and botanical forms.
The artist reconstructs and challenges our sense of space, subtracting material to present a segmented reality. Her work exhibits the speculative, contemplative moments in which we are formed, informed, and reminded by our surroundings over time.
Grace Tobin is a London-based painter, who graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2022. She previously studied fine art in Ohio, USA and Florence, Italy. She has exhibited internationally with Plain Gallery in Italy, Court Tree Collective in New York, as well as London Paint Club, Canopy Collections and Rhodes Contemporary Art in London.
